The Ontario Blues have beaten Argentine provincial side Salta 32-26 in the second game of their South American tour. Scoring four tries to the home side's three, the Blues are two wins from two against Salta, who toured to Canada in 2011.
Played at the Jockey Club in Salta in Argentina's north, the Blues opened the scoring with two tries, the firsy by flanker Cam Stones, the second by number eight Tyler Ardron. With Steve Piatek landing just one of the conversions, the Blues led 12-0.
The home side soon responded with a converted try and penalty goal to close the gap to 12-10.
A Steve Piatek drop goal for the Blues was answered by an uncoverted try by Salta, which leveled the scores at 15 apiece at the break.
A converted Ontario try early in the second half, scored by captain Mike Pletch restored the lead to 22-15.
Salta would add two more penaly goals and the Blues one, to make the score 25-21 heading into the final stretch.
Ontario's Ray Barkwill was yellow-carded at the 70th minute, but the Blues were able to score short-handed, substitute Dan West dotting down to make it 32-21 for the Blues.
A late consolation try by Salta closed the gap to make the final score 32-26, with with the home side's conversion attempt kept out by the post.
With three conversions, a penalty goal and a drop goal, fly-half Piatek was top scored with 12 points.
"It was a great victory for our guys to come all the way down here and win," stated Blues manager Mark Winokur. "The penalty count was not what we would have liked. It was 22-9 against us.
"Credit to our guys though as they didn't let that stop them. They deserved the win and now they're enjoying every minute of it."
Up next for the Blues is Uruguay on Sunday in Montevideo.
